Au Pairs From China - A Growing Trend

We have had several inquiries from host families regarding Chinese au pairs. Recruiting from China is relatively new in the au pair industry. Their services are in demand from host families seeking to expose their children to Mandarin and from host families who have adopted children from China. Au Pair in America was the first agency to recruit from China in 2004 and since then they have rectuited over 2000. The idea of being an au pair is a new concept in China, but its popularity is growing by leaps and bounds. The motivating factors are career development and improving English skills. In addition, Chinese youth want to broaden their cultural horizons and travel to America. Most young women interviewed said they want to learn about American culture and share their own traditions with American families. Most au pairs are recruited from Beijing, the capital of China and from other large cities. Chinese youth take English classes starting in primary school and they can speak and understand English, while older Chinese cannot - most Chinese over 45 have no English skills at all
The au pairs that are placed in American families are excited to be here, even though they may be quiet at first. They have been described as easy-going, hard working and open-minded.

Chinese-American families have a tough time finding Chinese nannies as many Chinese women are not interested in child-care careers. In China's new progressive climate, there are biases against "domestic" work and many parents of Chinese girls who seek to become au pairs disapprove. There are prejudices about taking care of children as a career. Parents want their daughters, many who are University educated
We will continue to follow and report on Chinese au pairs and we will post an article about Chinese culture soon. Please feel free to comment here on the Family Forum and if you have a Chinese au pair, we would love for you to share that experience with our readers.
